Grauman's Chinese Theatre opened over 75 years ago, with the 1927 debut of the original silent version of King of Kings, produced by Cecil B. DeMille. Since then, its Hollywood pedigree has made it the most famous movie theatre in the world. Millions of visitors flock to the Chinese Theatre each year, drawn by its legendary forecourt embedded with footprints of stars from the "Golden era" and beyond. The sign was erected in 1923 as an advertisement for a real-estate development and originally read HOLLYWOODLAND. The towering letters ar best viewed from below, at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Bronson Avenue.

Griffith Park is one of the nation's largest urban parks. Attractions on the grounds include the LA Zoo, golf courses, Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Greek Theatre, Travel Town, pony and train rides, as well as more than 53 miles of bridle and hiking trails. Perhaps the most iconic of its attractions, Griffith Observatory, was rendered world-famous as one of the settings for the film Rebel without a Cause. Griffith Observatory's bronze domes have been Hollywood Hills landmarks since 1935. The main dome houses a planetarium, where narrated projection shows reveal the stars and planets that are ordinarily hidden from the naked eye. The adjacent Hall of Science holds exhibits on galaxies, meteorites, and other cosmic happenings. Other points of interest include a special telescope trained on the sun, a Foucault pendulum, and earth and moon globes spanning 6 feet in diameter.

Turn north on Pacific Coast Highway (Calif. 1) below the coastline's bluffs, or south along Ocean Avenue; you can find parking in either direction.
